Prelims Strategy

To excel in NEET questions on Biodiversity Loss, a multi-pronged strategy is essential. Firstly, master the 'Evil Quartet': understand each of the four causes (habitat loss and fragmentation, over-exploitation, alien species invasions, co-extinctions) in detail.

For each cause, memorize 2-3 specific, well-known examples, especially those mentioned in NCERT (e.g., Steller's sea cow and Passenger Pigeon for over-exploitation; Nile perch in Lake Victoria for alien species invasion; *Parthenium*, *Lantana*, water hyacinth as invasive weeds in India).

Secondly, understand the consequences: be clear about how biodiversity loss impacts ecosystem services, stability, resilience, and human well-being. Thirdly, focus on definitions and key terms: concepts like endemism, biodiversity hotspots, IUCN Red List categories (critically endangered, endangered, vulnerable), and background extinction rates are frequently tested.

For numerical problems, pay attention to the magnitude of current extinction rates compared to natural rates. When tackling MCQs, carefully read the question to identify keywords like 'most important cause' or 'NOT a consequence.

' For conceptual questions, eliminate options by recalling the precise definitions and examples associated with each cause or consequence. Practice identifying the specific cause from a given scenario, as this is a common question pattern.

Avoid rote memorization without understanding the underlying ecological principles.
