Imagine a snail slowly gliding across a leaf, or an oyster firmly attached to a rock, or even a fast-moving squid darting through the ocean. These diverse creatures, despite their varied appearances and lifestyles, all belong to the fascinating Phylum Mollusca.

The word 'Mollusca' itself comes from the Latin word 'mollis,' meaning 'soft,' which perfectly describes their unsegmented, soft bodies. This phylum is incredibly successful and is the second largest animal phylum after Arthropoda, boasting an astonishing array of species found in almost every habitat on Earth – from the deepest parts of the ocean to high mountain streams and even your garden.

What makes a mollusc a mollusc? Several key features set them apart. Firstly, they have a soft body, which is usually divided into three main parts: a distinct head region (though sometimes reduced), a visceral mass containing most of the internal organs, and a muscular foot used for movement.

Secondly, most molluscs possess a protective outer shell, which can be external (like in snails), internal (like in squids), or even absent (like in slugs). This shell is secreted by a special fold of tissue called the mantle.

The mantle also creates a space called the mantle cavity, which is crucial for respiration, housing the gills (ctenidia) or lungs, and for waste excretion. Another unique characteristic is the radula, a rasping, tongue-like organ covered with chitinous teeth, used for scraping food.

While not all molluscs possess a radula (bivalves, for example, are filter feeders), it's a hallmark feature for many. Their body plan is bilaterally symmetrical, meaning they can be divided into two mirror-image halves, and they are triploblastic, developing from three germ layers.

They also possess a true coelom, a fluid-filled body cavity, though it's often reduced to spaces around the heart and gonads. From the slow-moving garden snail to the intelligent octopus, molluscs showcase an incredible range of adaptations, making them a captivating group to study in the animal kingdom.
