2-Minute Revision

Earthworms exhibit a segmented body, a characteristic called metamerism, with 100-120 segments. The anterior end has a sensory prostomium overhanging the mouth, which is in the first segment, the peristomium.

A prominent, glandular clitellum (segments 14-16 in *Pheretima*) is vital for reproduction, secreting materials for the cocoon. Tiny, S-shaped chitinous setae, arranged in a ring (perichaetine), project from most segments (absent on segments 1, last, and clitellar), providing traction for locomotion.

Key apertures include a pair of male genital pores on segment 18, a single female genital pore on segment 14, and four pairs of spermathecal pores in intersegmental grooves 5/6, 6/7, 7/8, 8/9. Numerous nephridiopores facilitate excretion, while dorsal pores (from 12/13 onwards) release coelomic fluid to keep the skin moist for respiration and protection.

The moist, vascularized skin is crucial for cutaneous respiration.

5-Minute Revision

The external morphology of the earthworm, exemplified by *Pheretima posthuma*, is a masterclass in adaptation for a burrowing lifestyle. Its body is long, cylindrical, and distinctly segmented, a feature known as metamerism, with typically 100-120 metameres. The anterior end is marked by the prostomium, a fleshy, pre-segmental lobe that acts as a sensory 'lip' for exploring the soil, overhanging the mouth located in the first true segment, the peristomium. The posterior end bears the anus.

A crucial reproductive structure is the clitellum, a thick, glandular, non-segmented band spanning segments 14, 15, and 16. It secretes mucus for copulation, albumen to nourish developing embryos, and a chitinous wall to form the protective cocoon.

Locomotion is primarily aided by numerous S-shaped, chitinous setae (bristles) embedded in the epidermis. In *Pheretima*, these are arranged in a ring around each segment (perichaetine arrangement), providing excellent grip. Importantly, setae are absent on the first, last, and clitellar segments.

Several external apertures are present:

    1
  1. Male Genital Pores:A pair on segment 18, ventro-laterally.
  2. 2
  3. Female Genital Pore:A single, median, ventral opening on segment 14.
  4. 3
  5. Spermathecal Pores:Four pairs located in the intersegmental grooves of 5/6, 6/7, 7/8, and 8/9, for receiving sperm.
  6. 4
  7. Nephridiopores:Numerous minute pores scattered over most segments for excretion.
  8. 5
  9. Dorsal Pores:Small, median openings in intersegmental grooves (from 12/13 onwards) that release coelomic fluid, vital for keeping the skin moist (for cutaneous respiration) and providing antiseptic protection.

The body wall itself consists of a thin cuticle, epidermis, and muscle layers. The moist, vascularized skin is the primary site for gas exchange. Earthworms lack true eyes but possess photoreceptors and chemoreceptors, especially at the anterior end, for environmental sensing. Mastering these specific locations and functions is key for NEET.

Prelims Revision Notes

    1
  1. Body Plan:Elongated, cylindrical, segmented (metameric). Approximately 100-120 segments in *Pheretima posthuma*.
  2. 2
  3. Coloration:Reddish-brown dorsally (due to porphyrin pigment for UV protection), lighter ventrally.
  4. 3
  5. Anterior End:

* Prostomium: Fleshy, sensory lobe, pre-segmental, overhangs mouth. Not a true segment. * Peristomium (Buccal Segment): First true segment (Segment 1), contains the mouth.

    1
  1. Posterior End:Anus located at the terminal end of the last segment (pygidium).
  2. 2
  3. Clitellum:

* Prominent, thick, glandular, non-segmented band. * Location: Segments 14, 15, 16 in *Pheretima posthuma*. * Function: Secretes mucus (copulation), albumen (embryo nutrition), chitinous wall (cocoon formation). * Note: Setae are absent on clitellar segments.

    1
  1. Setae (Chaetae):

* Tiny, S-shaped, chitinous bristles. * Arrangement: Perichaetine (in a ring around each segment) in *Pheretima*. * Location: Embedded in epidermal pits. Absent in segments 1, last, and clitellar segments. * Function: Locomotion (traction, anchoring).

    1
  1. External Apertures:

* Mouth: Crescent-shaped, ventral, in peristomium. * Anus: Small, circular, at posterior end. * Male Genital Pores: Pair, ventro-lateral, Segment 18. * Female Genital Pore: Single, median, ventral, Segment 14.

* Spermathecal Pores: Four pairs, ventro-lateral, in intersegmental grooves of 5/6, 6/7, 7/8, 8/9. Store sperm. * Nephridiopores: Numerous, minute, scattered over body surface (except first two segments).

Excretory. * Dorsal Pores: Small, median openings in intersegmental grooves, starting from 12/13 onwards. Release coelomic fluid for moisture, respiration, and protection.

    1
  1. Body Wall:Thin, moist cuticle (non-cellular) over epidermis (glandular, sensory cells), then circular and longitudinal muscle layers.
  2. 2
  3. Respiration:Cutaneous respiration (through moist, vascularized skin).
  4. 3
  5. Sensory Structures:Lack true eyes. Possess photoreceptors, chemoreceptors, tangoreceptors in epidermis, concentrated anteriorly.

Vyyuha Quick Recall

To remember the key segment numbers for *Pheretima posthuma*:

'5-6-7-8, Sperm is stored at the gate. 14 is the Lady's date, 18 is where the Man will wait. Clitellum's a band, 14-16, a reproductive land!'

  • 5-6-7-8:Refers to the intersegmental grooves 5/6, 6/7, 7/8, 8/9 for the 4 pairs of Spermathecal pores.
  • 14 is the Lady's date:Refers to Segment 14 for the single Female genital pore.
  • 18 is where the Man will wait:Refers to Segment 18 for the pair of Male genital pores.
  • Clitellum's a band, 14-16:Refers to the Clitellum covering segments 14, 15, and 16.
