Prelims Strategy

To effectively tackle NEET questions on Circulatory Pathways, a multi-pronged strategy is essential. Firstly, master the definitions of open, closed, single, incomplete double, and complete double circulation.

Understand the core mechanism of each. Secondly, memorize key examples for each type of pathway. Pay special attention to exceptions, such as cephalopods (closed system among molluscs) and crocodiles (four-chambered heart among reptiles), as these are frequent trap questions.

Creating a mental or physical table comparing the features (e.g., pressure, efficiency, mixing of blood, heart chambers) of open vs. closed, and single vs. double circulation will be highly beneficial.

For numerical or conceptual problems, carefully read the question to identify what type of circulatory system is being referred to or asked about. If a question describes a blood flow pattern, visualize it and match it to the correct circulatory type.

For instance, 'blood passes through the heart only once' immediately points to single circulation. When dealing with options, eliminate distractors by recalling the specific characteristics and examples.

For instance, if asked about an open system, eliminate all vertebrates and annelids first. Practice identifying the number of heart chambers associated with different vertebrate classes (fish-2, amphibians/most reptiles-3, birds/mammals/crocodiles-4).

Drawing simple flow diagrams for each type of circulation can solidify your understanding and help in quick recall during the exam.
