Cardiac Cycle — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
To excel in NEET questions on the cardiac cycle, a multi-faceted strategy is essential. Firstly, memorize the precise sequence and duration of each phase (atrial systole, isovolumetric contraction, ventricular ejection, isovolumetric relaxation, rapid filling, diastasis).
Create a mental timeline. Secondly, understand the 'why' behind valve actions: valves open and close due to pressure gradients, not active muscle contraction. Know which valves are open/closed in each phase.
Thirdly, master the correlation with heart sounds (S1 from AV closure, S2 from semilunar closure) and ECG waves (P wave for atrial systole, QRS for ventricular systole, T wave for ventricular diastole).
Fourthly, pay close attention to pressure and volume changes within the atria and ventricles throughout the cycle; visualize how these changes drive blood flow. For numerical problems, remember the formula for cardiac cycle duration () and stroke volume ().
Practice identifying common trap options, such as confusing S1 and S2, or misplacing events in the cycle. Drawing a simple diagram of the cycle with all events can be a powerful revision tool.
