Human Circulatory System — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
To excel in NEET questions on the Human Circulatory System, a multi-pronged strategy is essential. Firstly, master the anatomy of the heart: clearly visualize the four chambers, the major blood vessels entering and leaving each chamber, and the location and function of all valves (tricuspid, bicuspid/mitral, pulmonary, aortic).
Use diagrams extensively for this. Secondly, understand the cardiac cycle as a sequential process, memorizing the duration of each phase (atrial systole, ventricular systole, joint diastole) and the associated events like valve closures/openings and heart sounds ('lub-dub').
Thirdly, learn the conduction system pathway (SA node AV node Bundle of His Purkinje fibers) and the role of each component, especially the SA node as the pacemaker.
For ECG, focus on what each wave (P, QRS, T) represents in terms of atrial/ventricular depolarization/repolarization. Fourthly, memorize blood composition: the types of formed elements, their specific functions, and their relative abundance.
Pay close attention to blood groups (ABO and Rh) and their compatibility rules for transfusions, as these are common traps. Finally, for numerical problems like cardiac output, understand the formula () and practice unit conversions.
Be wary of trap options that reverse functions or misplace structures. Always read the question carefully, especially when it asks for 'incorrect' statements.
