Skeletal System — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
To excel in NEET questions on the Skeletal System, a multi-pronged strategy is essential. Firstly, memorization of bone counts is non-negotiable. Create flashcards or use mnemonics for the number of bones in the skull, vertebral column, rib cage, and each segment of the upper and lower limbs.
Practice drawing and labeling the major bones of the axial and appendicular skeleton. Secondly, master joint classification. Understand the three main types (fibrous, cartilaginous, synovial) and then delve into the six sub-types of synovial joints.
For each, know its characteristic movement (uniaxial, biaxial, multiaxial) and at least two clear examples. Visual aids, like diagrams of different joints, are highly beneficial. Thirdly, focus on functions and associated structures.
Clearly differentiate the roles of ligaments (bone to bone) and tendons (muscle to bone). Understand the various functions of bones beyond support, such as mineral storage and hematopoiesis. Fourthly, pay attention to disorders.
For common skeletal disorders (e.g., osteoporosis, arthritis), know their basic pathology, key symptoms, and which parts of the skeletal system are primarily affected. Finally, practice diagram-based questions.
NEET often uses labeled diagrams of bones or joints, asking for identification or function. Regularly review anatomical diagrams. When solving MCQs, carefully read the question to identify keywords like 'NOT' or 'INCORRECT', and systematically eliminate incorrect options by recalling specific facts and classifications.
