Human Endocrine System — Prelims Strategy

Prelims Strategy

To excel in NEET questions on the Human Endocrine System, a systematic approach is essential. Start by creating a detailed table for each major endocrine gland, noting its location, the hormones it secretes, and the primary functions of each hormone.

Pay special attention to the chemical nature of hormones (peptide, steroid, amino acid derivative) as this dictates their mechanism of action (cell surface vs. intracellular receptors). For numerical problems (though rare in this specific topic, conceptual 'numerical' problems involving hormone levels are possible), understand the concept of feedback loops.

If a question describes symptoms, immediately try to link them to specific hormonal imbalances (hypo- or hyper-secretion) and the corresponding gland. For example, 'increased blood glucose' should immediately bring insulin/glucagon to mind.

Always read all options carefully; distractors often present functions of other hormones or incorrect mechanisms. For conceptual questions, eliminate options that are factually incorrect or describe functions of unrelated hormones.

Practice distinguishing between similar-sounding hormones or those with seemingly overlapping functions (e.g., oxytocin vs. prolactin, calcitonin vs. PTH). A strong grasp of the hypothalamus-pituitary axis and its regulatory hormones is critical, as many questions revolve around this central control system.

Finally, don't overlook the hormones secreted by organs like the heart, kidney, and GI tract, as these are common traps.
