Digestion in Stomach — Prelims Strategy

Prelims Strategy

To effectively tackle NEET questions on digestion in the stomach, a multi-pronged strategy is essential. Firstly, master the anatomy and cell types of the gastric glands. Create a table listing each cell type (parietal/oxyntic, chief/peptic, mucous neck, G cells) and their specific secretions.

This is a high-yield area for direct recall questions. Secondly, understand the function of each component of gastric juice (HCl, pepsinogen/pepsin, gastric lipase, mucus, intrinsic factor). For HCl, remember its multiple roles: denaturing proteins, activating pepsinogen, and antimicrobial action.

For pepsin, focus on its protein-digesting role and optimal acidic pH. Intrinsic factor's link to Vitamin B12 absorption and pernicious anemia is critical.

Thirdly, grasp the hormonal and neural regulation of gastric secretion and motility. Differentiate between stimulatory hormones (gastrin) and inhibitory hormones (secretin, CCK, GIP) and their sources.

Remember the three phases of gastric control (cephalic, gastric, intestinal). For numerical problems (though less common in this specific subtopic, pH values might appear), understand the concept of pH and its implications for enzyme activity.

Finally, pay attention to common misconceptions and clinical correlations, such as why the stomach doesn't digest itself (mucus barrier) or the consequences of intrinsic factor deficiency. Practice MCQs that test both direct recall and conceptual understanding, focusing on differentiating between similar-sounding terms or functions.
