Prelims Strategy

To excel in NEET questions on the regulation of digestion, a systematic approach is essential. Firstly, create a clear table or flashcards for each major GI hormone, noting its source, the primary stimulus for its release, its target organs, and its specific actions.

Pay close attention to whether a hormone is stimulatory or inhibitory. Secondly, thoroughly understand the neural control: differentiate between the intrinsic Enteric Nervous System (ENS) and the extrinsic sympathetic and parasympathetic systems.

Remember that parasympathetic (vagus) generally stimulates digestion, while sympathetic generally inhibits it. Thirdly, master the three phases of gastric secretion (cephalic, gastric, intestinal), identifying the key triggers and events in each.

For conceptual questions, think about the 'why' behind each regulatory step – why is acid neutralized in the duodenum? Why is gastric emptying slowed when fats are present? This helps in eliminating trap options.

Practice matching questions, as they are common for hormones and their functions. For numerical problems (though rare), ensure you understand the quantitative aspects of secretion if any are presented in a conceptual context.
