Prelims Strategy

To excel in NEET questions on fertilisation, a step-by-step approach is crucial. First, thoroughly memorize the chronological sequence of events, from sperm capacitation to zygote formation. Create flowcharts or diagrams for better retention.

Second, understand the function of each key structure (corona radiata, zona pellucida, acrosome, cortical granules) and the specific enzymes involved (hyaluronidase, acrosin). Pay close attention to the triggers and outcomes of major reactions like the acrosome reaction and cortical reaction.

For conceptual questions, always break down the process into smaller steps and identify where each option fits. For 'incorrect statement' type questions, evaluate each option individually against your clear understanding of the process.

Be wary of trap options that mix up the order of events or misattribute functions of enzymes/structures. For example, confusing the role of hyaluronidase with acrosin is a common trap. Practice identifying the immediate consequences of specific events, such as what triggers the completion of meiosis II.

Finally, review the clinical relevance, particularly IVF and ICSI, as these often appear in application-based questions.
