Prelims Strategy

To excel in NEET questions on Pregnancy and Embryonic Development, a multi-pronged strategy is recommended. Firstly, master the sequence of events: meticulously learn the order of early embryonic stages (zygote \rightarrow morula \rightarrow blastocyst \rightarrow implantation \rightarrow gastrulation \rightarrow organogenesis).

Flowcharts and diagrams are invaluable here. Secondly, memorize germ layer derivatives: create a table or mnemonic for what each of the three germ layers (ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm) gives rise to.

This is a very common question type. Thirdly, understand hormonal roles: clearly differentiate the source and function of key hormones like hCG, progesterone, estrogen, and hPL. Pay attention to their roles in maintaining pregnancy and preparing for parturition.

Fourthly, know placental functions: list out all the functions of the placenta (exchange, endocrine, barrier, immune transfer). Finally, focus on key milestones: remember the approximate timing of major developmental events across the three trimesters, such as heart development, quickening, and lung maturation.

For conceptual questions, break down the problem into identifying the core concept, recalling relevant facts, and eliminating incorrect options based on your knowledge. Practice with previous year questions to identify common traps and frequently tested areas.
