Infertility — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
To effectively tackle NEET questions on Infertility, especially ARTs, a systematic approach is essential. Firstly, memorize the full forms of all acronyms: IVF, ZIFT, GIFT, ICSI, AI. Secondly, create a mental or physical table comparing these ARTs based on three critical parameters:
- Location of Fertilization: — Does it happen inside the body (in vivo) or outside (in vitro)?
- Stage of Transfer: — What is transferred – unfertilized gametes (eggs and sperm), a fertilized egg (zygote), or a developed embryo?
- Location of Transfer: — Where is the transfer made – the fallopian tube or the uterus?
For conceptual questions, pay close attention to keywords like 'unfertilized gametes,' 'zygote,' 'embryo,' 'in vitro,' 'in vivo,' 'fallopian tube,' and 'uterus.' For numerical problems (though rare), ensure you understand any given values or ratios.
Trap options often involve mixing up the features of different ARTs (e.g., attributing GIFT's features to ZIFT). Always read all options carefully before selecting the best fit. Practice identifying the most suitable ART for specific infertility scenarios (e.
g., severe male factor, blocked tubes, unexplained infertility). A strong grasp of the underlying biological principles of reproduction will also help in understanding the causes of infertility.
