Prelims Strategy

To effectively tackle cancer questions in NEET Prelims, a multi-pronged strategy is essential. Firstly, master the definitions and distinctions: clearly understand the differences between benign and malignant tumors, and the roles of proto-oncogenes, oncogenes, and tumor suppressor genes.

These are frequent conceptual traps. Secondly, memorize key examples of carcinogens: know specific physical (UV, X-rays), chemical (tobacco, asbestos), and biological (HPV, HBV) carcinogens and the cancers they are primarily associated with.

Create flashcards for these. Thirdly, understand the principles of detection and treatment: for detection, focus on why biopsy is definitive, and how imaging techniques (CT, MRI) are used. For treatment, grasp the basic mechanism and common side effects of surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy.

For numerical problems (though rare in cancer, conceptual 'steps' are key), break down the question into identifying the core concept, recalling relevant facts, and systematically eliminating incorrect options.

Pay close attention to keywords like 'NOT,' 'EXCEPT,' or 'CORRECT' in the question stem to avoid misinterpretation. Practice previous year's questions to identify recurring themes and question patterns.
