Imagine a world where every time a new animal species was discovered, different scientists called it different things, leading to utter confusion! The same problem arose in chemistry with the discovery of new, super-heavy elements.

For elements with atomic numbers up to 100, most have well-established, often historical, names like Hydrogen, Oxygen, Uranium, etc. However, as scientists began synthesizing elements with atomic numbers greater than 100 in laboratories, a need arose for a systematic way to name them *before* their discovery was fully verified and a permanent, often honorific, name was decided upon.

This is where the IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) nomenclature system comes in.

This system provides a temporary, systematic name for elements with atomic numbers greater than 100. It's like giving a newborn baby a temporary name until the parents decide on a permanent one. The beauty of this system is its simplicity and universality.

It uses specific numerical roots (like 'un' for 1, 'bi' for 2, 'tri' for 3, and so on) that correspond to each digit in the element's atomic number. These roots are then put together in the order of the digits, and the entire name is concluded with the suffix '-ium'.

For example, if an element has an atomic number of 101, the digits are 1, 0, 1. So, it would be 'un' (for 1), 'nil' (for 0), 'un' (for 1), followed by '-ium'. This gives us 'Unnilunium'. The symbol is derived from the first letter of each root, so for Unnilunium, it would be 'Unu'.

This systematic approach ensures that any scientist, anywhere in the world, can immediately understand the atomic number of an element just by looking at its temporary IUPAC name or symbol, eliminating ambiguity during the crucial phase of discovery and verification.
