Nomenclature of Elements — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
To effectively tackle NEET questions on the nomenclature of elements, a systematic approach is key. First and foremost, memorize the numerical roots (0-9) and their corresponding digits (nil-0, un-1, bi-2, tri-3, quad-4, pent-5, hex-6, sept-7, oct-8, enn-9).
This is the foundation. Remember the universal suffix is always '-ium'. For numerical problems, break down the atomic number digit by digit and apply the roots sequentially. Pay close attention to the 'i' rule: when 'bi' or 'tri' is followed by '-ium', it becomes '-bium' or '-trium' (only one 'i').
When deriving the symbol, take the first letter of each root, ensuring the first letter is capitalized and the subsequent ones are lowercase. For conceptual questions, remember that these systematic names are *temporary* and are replaced by permanent trivial names.
Practice converting atomic numbers to names/symbols and vice-versa. Be wary of trap options that use incorrect roots, wrong suffixes, or misspellings. A quick mental check of the atomic number from the given name or symbol can help verify your answer.
