Prelims Strategy

To excel in NEET questions on covalent bond fission, a multi-pronged strategy is essential. First, thoroughly understand the definitions and distinctions between homolytic and heterolytic fission. Pay close attention to the electron movement depicted by fish-hook arrows (single electron) for homolysis and curved arrows (electron pair) for heterolysis.

Second, memorize the characteristic conditions that favor each type of fission: high temperature, UV light, and peroxides for homolysis; polar solvents, good leaving groups, and catalysts for heterolysis.

This will help you quickly identify the fission type in a given reaction scenario.

Third, and most critically, master the stability orders of the reactive intermediates: carbocations, carbanions, and free radicals. Remember that carbocations and free radicals generally follow the order 3circ>2circ>1circ>methyl3^circ > 2^circ > 1^circ > \text{methyl} due to hyperconjugation and inductive effects.

Carbanions, however, follow the opposite trend for simple alkyl systems: extmethyl>1circ>2circ>3circext{methyl} > 1^circ > 2^circ > 3^circ, as electron-donating alkyl groups destabilize the negative charge. Practice ranking stability for various substituted intermediates, including allylic and benzylic systems which are highly stabilized by resonance.

For numerical problems (though rare in this specific subtopic), ensure you understand how bond dissociation energies relate to the energy required for fission. Finally, practice a wide variety of MCQs, focusing on identifying trap options that confuse fission types, stability orders, or arrow notations.

Always analyze why the correct answer is right and why the incorrect options are wrong.
