Environmental Pollution — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
To excel in NEET questions on Environmental Pollution, a multi-pronged strategy is essential. Firstly, master the definitions and classifications of pollutants (primary/secondary, biodegradable/non-biodegradable) and pollution types (air, water, soil).
Create flashcards for key terms like BOD, COD, eutrophication, greenhouse effect, and smog. Secondly, memorize specific pollutants, their chemical formulas, primary sources, and major effects. For instance, know that causes acid rain and respiratory issues, causes carboxyhemoglobin, and nitrates cause blue baby syndrome.
Thirdly, understand the chemical reactions involved in critical environmental phenomena. For example, be able to write the simplified reactions for acid rain formation (, ), ozone depletion by CFCs, and the formation of photochemical smog components like ozone and PAN.
For numerical problems, practice BOD calculations and unit conversions. Pay close attention to trap options, which often involve confusing similar-sounding terms (e.g., London smog vs. photochemical smog) or misattributing effects of one pollutant to another.
Always read the question carefully to identify what is being asked (e.g., 'incorrect' statement, 'not a' pollutant).
