Analgesics, Tranquilizers, Antidepressants — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
To effectively tackle NEET questions on analgesics, tranquilizers, and antidepressants, a multi-pronged strategy is essential. Firstly, memorization of key drug names and their classifications is non-negotiable.
Create flashcards or tables listing the drug name (generic/chemical), its class (e.g., NSAID, benzodiazepine, SSRI), and a prominent example. Secondly, understand the core mechanism of action for each class.
For instance, know that NSAIDs inhibit COX enzymes, benzodiazepines enhance GABA, and SSRIs block serotonin reuptake. Focus on the 'how' rather than intricate biochemical details. Thirdly, pay attention to distinguishing features and common side effects.
For example, differentiate between the addiction potential of opioids versus non-opioids, or the anticholinergic effects of TCAs versus the sexual dysfunction of SSRIs. When approaching MCQs, eliminate options that belong to entirely different drug classes or have clearly incorrect mechanisms.
For conceptual questions, break down the question to identify the specific drug class or mechanism being tested. Practice identifying the 'odd one out' or matching drug names to their functions. Regular revision of these factual points is crucial, as the questions are often direct recall-based.
