Assumption Questions — Definition

Definition
An assumption is an unstated proposition that an argument relies on to connect its stated reasons to its conclusion. In a necessary-assumption question, the correct option identifies something the reasoning requires, rather than a fact that merely makes it more persuasive.
If a town proposes to replace a footbridge with a ferry to maintain access, the argument depends on the ferry being usable when the relevant journeys must occur. It need not assume that the ferry is the cheapest possible service.
The task is to expose the missing bridge in the reasoning without strengthening it beyond necessity.
