Word Analogies — Revision Notes

Updated 19 Oct 2026

⚡ 30-Second Revision

  • Turn the first pair into a sentence.
  • Preserve relation, direction and level.
  • Association alone is weak evidence.
  • Use the partner word to fix an ambiguous meaning.
  • Compare the closest option, not just obviously unrelated ones.

2-Minute Revision

An analogy transfers a relationship between pairs. Identify whether the stem concerns a component, function, degree, category or another precise relation. Substitute each option into the same relational sentence and retain the order of the terms. A reverse pair can be closely associated yet wrong. Do not rescue a candidate with an unusual meaning unless the stem supports that sense. If two pairs remain equally valid, the practice question needs clarification rather than a fabricated distinction.

5-Minute Revision

Compare 'minute : hour' with 'centimetre : metre' and 'kilometre : metre'. The first candidate preserves smaller-unit-to-larger-unit direction; the second reverses it. However, minute-to-hour has a factor of 60 while centimetre-to-metre has a factor of 100. If the task asks for the same conversion factor, the first candidate is also insufficient. Explain why the relation's stated precision matters. Then write an unambiguous analogy using 'second : minute' as the matching pair.
