Word Analogies — UPSC Importance
UPSC Importance Analysis
Word analogies develop precision in language and relational reasoning. They sit within the broader logical reasoning and comprehension skills named in the 2026 Preliminary Paper II syllabus, without implying a fixed allocation of questions to this exercise type. Their value lies in identifying a relation accurately and transferring it to a new pair.
Many wrong answers are not random. They preserve the subject area while reversing direction, substitute an associated object for a functional counterpart, or match only one word's meaning. A prepared learner can be attracted to these options, which makes the explanation of the relationship more valuable than memorising a vocabulary pair.
Preparation should include familiar words with several plausible relations and a small number of contextual meaning distinctions. State the relation aloud, compare the closest alternatives and explain what changes when the pair is reversed.
This approach also improves reading of arguments and definitions, where category, cause, example and component are different logical roles. Vocabulary knowledge supports the process, but a broad word list cannot replace a clear account of why the selected relationship fits both pairs.
