Prelims Strategy

Read any supplied classification condition before inspecting the options. If the question specifies divisibility, use that property; do not substitute a different fact about the same numbers. If no condition is given, look for a simple common rule followed by three items and test whether an equally natural competing rule selects another item.

For numerical lists, check arithmetic properties systematically rather than calculating unrelated features at random. Distinguish a prime from a square of a prime and a multiple from a power. For verbal lists, keep the semantic level consistent: an example of a category should not be casually compared with the category itself. Letter patterns require the same position, alphabet convention and counting rule for each item.

After identifying a candidate, state the rule and verify the other three entries explicitly. This catches a frequent error in which two items fit but a third is quietly ignored. Use the wording and option structure to resolve intended scope, but do not treat an answer key as evidence that a genuinely ambiguous list has only one possible classification.
