Prelims Strategy

First identify the legend, scale, units and bar type. For an upper segment, write its lower and upper boundaries before subtracting. For a normalised chart, look for the underlying totals before attempting an absolute comparison. If they are absent, recognise that some amount comparisons cannot be resolved.

Translate the requested calculation into a numerator and denominator in words. For example, combined R share means R in both bars divided by the combined total, not the average of two displayed percentages. When comparing change, distinguish amount change, percentage change and percentage-point change. Retain enough precision to separate the options and round at the end.

Use a quick reconciliation check: component values should add to the bar total, and a stated share should lie between zero and one hundred percent for the ordinary nonnegative stacks used here. Treat this as a consistency check, not a licence to ignore a chart that uses a different convention. Finally, describe why each tempting alternative fails: incorrect boundary, wrong period's total, missing weight or confusion between units and percentages.
