Definition

Mathematical puzzles express numerical relationships through a short scenario involving quantities such as digits, ages, transfers, remainders or sequences. Solving them requires translating the wording into a model and checking that the resulting values satisfy every condition.

Unknowns may be restricted to positive integers, permitted digits or particular units. An algebraic result can therefore be inadmissible even when the calculation is internally correct. A reliable method names the quantities, writes the relationships, solves them and substitutes the answer back into the original story before selecting an option.
