Mental Ability — Definition

Definition

Mental ability is a broad set of reasoning skills used to recognise relationships, represent constraints and draw justified conclusions. Exercises may involve numbers, words, spatial arrangements, sequences or simple quantitative decisions.

The aim is not to guess a pattern as quickly as possible but to identify a rule that fits the stated information and test it consistently. Different problem types call for different representations, such as a table, diagram, equation or short logical statement.

A strong solver also recognises when information is insufficient and distinguishes a necessary conclusion from one that is merely possible.
