Problem Solving — Definition

Definition

Problem solving is the use of evidence and reasoning to choose an action that addresses a defined gap within relevant constraints. It includes clarifying the objective, investigating possible causes, generating alternatives, comparing trade-offs and checking results.

A visible symptom does not automatically identify its cause, and an attractive long-term reform may not satisfy an urgent short-term requirement. In an objective reasoning question, the best answer must fit the facts and conditions supplied.

It should not depend on an invented circumstance or a preferred remedy that has been assumed before the problem is understood.
