Prelims Strategy

Build a recognition table with four columns: element, position, function and example. Put the sanctum tower and entrance tower on different rows. When an image shows several towers, locate the enclosure and central shrine before choosing the architectural term. Height alone is a poor classifier.

Prepare construction distinctions separately. A monolithic ratha can look like a built shrine while still being carved from one rock mass. Conversely, the Shore Temple is structural; its presence at Mamallapuram does not make it a cave. Read whether the question asks about appearance, technique or patronage.

Use a short chronological chain for the Chola monuments: Rajaraja I–Thanjavur, Rajendra I–Gangaikondacholapuram, Rajaraja II–Darasuram. Check both halves of each pair. The shared dynasty makes a swapped ruler an attractive distractor.

Finally, treat terminology contextually. The word shikhara can carry different architectural scope in different regional descriptions. Do not transfer the northern use of the whole superstructure uncritically into a question asking about the crown of a southern vimana.
