Handloom Textiles — Historical Overview
Historical Overview
A loom maintains warp yarns while weft is passed across them. In handloom weaving the loom is operated through human effort, but earlier stages may use other technologies. Calling a fabric handloom therefore does not establish that its yarn was hand-spun. Khadi combines hand spinning and hand weaving in India using the relevant natural fibres; the two terms overlap without being identical.
Examples illustrate several dimensions of classification. Kota Doria uses a cotton-silk construction associated with its characteristic checks. Jamdani creates ornament through supplementary weft, and ikat prepares patterned yarn before weaving. These descriptions concern material, structure or technique rather than a single universal style of handloom cloth.
Handloom Mark was launched on 28 June 2006 to support identification of genuinely handwoven products. India Handloom Brand began on 7 August 2015 with specified quality parameters. A mark's scope should be read precisely: authenticity and quality are related but distinct claims. Price or visible irregularity is not a substitute for reliable production evidence.
Livelihood analysis also needs care. In a hypothetical sale yielding ₹2,400, subtracting ₹900 in purchased inputs leaves ₹1,500 before other costs and the division of income. It is not automatically the weaver's net wage. Environmental evaluation similarly extends beyond loom energy to fibre production, dyeing, finishing, transport, use and disposal.
