Handloom Textiles — Definition
Updated 19 Oct 2026
Definition
Handloom textiles are fabrics woven on looms operated by human effort. The term identifies the weaving stage and does not, by itself, specify the fibre, the origin of the yarn or the method of ornamentation.
A handloom can use mill-spun yarn; khadi additionally requires hand spinning under its defined framework. Handloom traditions combine practical knowledge of warp, weft, tension and design with systems of learning and work.
Their assessment should distinguish production authenticity, product quality, producer earnings and environmental performance because these require different kinds of evidence.
