Foreign Exchange Reserves — Definition

Updated 19 Oct 2026

Definition

Foreign exchange reserves are official external assets that provide a buffer for international payment needs and external financial stress. India's reported total includes foreign currency assets, monetary gold, Special Drawing Rights holdings and the reserve position in the IMF.

These components have different forms and should not be treated as a pile of dollar banknotes. A reserve figure is a stock measured on a specified date, while trade and capital movements are flows over a period.

Its dollar value can change through transactions or valuation effects, so the movement in the headline total requires interpretation before being used as evidence of economic strength or weakness.
