Energy flow and nutrient cycling are the two most fundamental processes that keep ecosystems functioning and alive. Think of an ecosystem as a complex machine where energy and nutrients are the fuel and raw materials that keep everything running.

Energy flow refers to the one-way movement of energy through an ecosystem, starting from the sun and passing through different levels of life forms - from plants to herbivores to carnivores. This energy cannot be recycled and eventually gets lost as heat.

On the other hand, nutrient cycling is the continuous movement of essential chemical elements like carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus through the living and non-living parts of an ecosystem. Unlike energy, nutrients can be reused over and over again.
