Ecosystem Structure and Function — Revision Notes
⚡ 30-Second Revision
Revision checked 17 October 2026.
- Structure: components and arrangement.
- Function: production, feeding, decomposition and nutrient movement.
- Standing crop is a stock; productivity is a rate.
- NPP = GPP − producer respiration.
- Restoration needs functional as well as structural evidence.
2-Minute Revision
Choose an ecosystem boundary before describing inputs and outputs. A pond receives materials from its catchment. Producers, consumers and decomposing organisms connect through energy and material transfers. Energy supply and dissipation differ from reuse of nutrient elements. Productivity figures need a time basis; a biomass snapshot does not. Restoration claims should be matched to indicators rather than inferred from one visible output.
5-Minute Revision
Original analytical drill: A pond restoration project plants its banks but leaves an upstream nutrient discharge unchanged. Explain why vegetation establishment alone cannot establish water-quality recovery.
Trace the external input, producer response, dead organic matter and oxygen demand. Suggest measurements of the relevant water conditions alongside vegetation survival and composition. State the monitoring period and compare with the baseline.
The exercise requires a system boundary and a causal chain, not a list of unrelated benefits.
