UPSC Importance Analysis

Attitude is a foundation for GS IV's discussion of behaviour, persuasion, prejudice and public-service orientation. It helps explain why people may express support for a policy yet act differently, and why information alone may fail to change conduct. The subject is useful when a case requires distinguishing belief, feeling, intention and actual opportunity.

NCERT Psychology's current chapter provides the ABC components and structural distinctions such as valence, extremeness, complexity and centrality. These terms should be applied to examples rather than memorised as interchangeable labels. A highly negative attitude is not automatically complex, and a central attitude is not defined merely by frequency of expression.

For administrative analysis, use the concepts to diagnose a barrier without making unsupported claims about an individual's motives. A person may support public transport but lack a usable service. Objective practice develops conceptual precision for this Mains-oriented area; no separate ethics Prelims paper or fabricated PYQ frequency is implied. The strongest application combines psychological explanation with attention to circumstances and evidence.
