Social Influence and Persuasion — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
Use these objective questions as conceptual practice for Ethics, whose main CSE application is GS IV. Identify whether a statement concerns a belief, feeling, behavioural tendency or observed act. An intention to conserve water and actual water use are related but distinct; a practical barrier can prevent the intended behaviour without proving that the attitude is insincere.
For source credibility, distinguish relevant expertise from familiarity or celebrity. For message design, check whether an omitted detail materially changes the decision. Simplification is useful when it retains the essential meaning; concealment of a significant limitation is a different issue. In a scenario, use the evidence supplied rather than assuming that a stronger slogan is the solution.
Keep evaluation measures separate. Impressions measure exposure, favourable responses suggest attitude or approval, and sustained practice requires behavioural evidence over time. A before-and-after change does not establish exclusive causation if services or incentives changed simultaneously. Likewise, absence of objection should be interpreted in the context of participants' understanding and ability to express concerns.
