Empathy, Tolerance and Compassion — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
Locate the specific mental or practical act in the stem. Understanding another person's perspective is empathy; feeling concern is not necessarily the same as understanding; acting to relieve suffering adds the compassionate response. Tolerance concerns how differences are allowed to coexist and should not be confused with accepting the truth of every claim.
Check whether the proposed assistance is fair and authorised. An officer can listen respectfully and still refuse a request with reasons. A private exception for a familiar person is not justified merely because it is compassionate. Look for criteria that could apply to similarly situated people and for evidence about the person's actual need.
Avoid treating emotional restraint as indifference or firm boundaries as intolerance. A public meeting can protect disagreement while preventing threats through impartial rules. After each answer, identify why the rejected option seemed humane or efficient and what it overlooked. These questions test distinctions for GS IV; they do not establish a separate Ethics Prelims paper or reproduce an attributed PYQ.
