Contributions of Moral Thinkers and Philosophers — UPSC Importance

UPSC Importance Analysis

Moral thinkers contribute to GS IV by offering structured ways to examine liberty, fairness, responsibility and the justification of action. Their value is not confined to naming a philosopher in an introduction. A well-used idea changes how the problem is analysed and helps explain why one option is preferable to another.

Prepare a small number of arguments in depth and compare them through concrete cases. Mill's discussion of liberty asks about justified interference; Rawls's thought experiment tests the fairness of institutional choice; Gandhi's account of self-rule links freedom with responsibility. These are different questions, so a common policy conclusion does not make the arguments interchangeable.

The current NCERT chapters provide reliable starting points and prevent invented quotations. Objective practice on this page tests conceptual distinctions for a Mains-oriented subject rather than claiming a separate ethics Prelims paper. In essays and case studies, state the argument, apply it to the facts and acknowledge a serious limit. This demonstrates understanding more effectively than an unsupported quotation attributed to a famous person.
