Reward and Punishment System — Revision Notes

Updated 19 Oct 2026

⚡ 30-Second Revision

  • Reinforcement strengthens; punishment seeks reduction.
  • Positive adds; negative reinforcement removes an aversive condition.
  • Intention ≠ demonstrated behavioural effect.
  • Check purpose, proxy, opportunity and proportionality.
  • Protect reliable reporting and reasoned review.

2-Minute Revision

Evaluate incentives at two levels: their behavioural effect and their ethical justification. Raw output can distort service when complexity and quality differ. Relevant, transparent distinctions support fair assessment. Investigate misconduct through a proportionate process, repair systemic weaknesses and check whether the scheme makes staff hide the evidence needed for improvement.

5-Minute Revision

Compare a reward for files closed with one combining timeliness, accuracy and case complexity. Identify a possible distortion and an administrative cost in each design. Then classify removal of a duplicate review after successful training and explain why the psychological label does not decide whether the policy is fair.

Purpose → measure → behaviour → fairness → review.
