Biodiversity Hotspots — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
For Prelims, a strong factual foundation is key. Begin by memorizing the two criteria for hotspot designation (1,500 endemic vascular plants, 70% habitat loss). Next, master the names and precise geographical locations of all 36 global biodiversity hotspots, with particular emphasis on the four Indian hotspots: Western Ghats, Eastern Himalayas, Indo-Burma, and Sundaland (specifically India's Nicobar Islands).
For each Indian hotspot, focus on: (a) its exact geographical spread, (b) characteristic vegetation types, (c) 2-3 prominent endemic flora and fauna species (e.g., Purple Frog, Lion-tailed Macaque for Western Ghats; Red Panda for Eastern Himalayas), (d) major threats, and (e) significant protected areas within them.
Pay attention to any recent species discoveries or major conservation initiatives. Understand the role of Norman Myers and Conservation International. Familiarize yourself with the core provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, and their connection to international conventions like CBD and CITES.
Use maps extensively for visualization and recall. Create flashcards for quick revision of facts and figures.
