Prelims Strategy

For Prelims, the strategy for Asia's geography must be heavily focused on factual accuracy, location-based knowledge, and conceptual clarity. Aspirants should prioritize mastering the physical map of Asia: identifying major mountain ranges (Himalayas, Hindu Kush, Ural, Altai, Tien Shan, Caucasus), their highest peaks, and their relative locations.

Similarly, knowing the major plateaus (Tibetan, Arabian, Central Siberian) and plains (Indo-Gangetic, Siberian) is crucial. A significant emphasis should be placed on river systems: their origins (often the Tibetan Plateau or Himalayas), the countries they flow through, and their mouths.

For instance, knowing that the Mekong flows through six countries or the Yangtze entirely within China is a typical Prelims question. Climate patterns, especially the monsoon system, its causes, and effects, are frequently tested.

Memorizing key geographical terms (e.g., archipelago, Pamir Knot, rain shadow) and their definitions is also important. Vyyuha recommends using high-quality atlases extensively, practicing map-based questions, and creating flashcards for quick recall of facts, coordinates, and statistics.

Pay attention to 'extremes' – highest, lowest, largest, longest – as these are common Prelims targets. Regularly revise the boundaries of regional divisions (East, South, Southeast, Central, West Asia) and the countries within them.

The goal is to build a strong factual foundation that can withstand tricky options.
