Prelims Strategy

For Prelims, the strategy for Sustainable Development should focus on meticulous factual recall and understanding key concepts. Begin by memorizing the Brundtland definition and its year (1987). Understand the 17 SDGs, not necessarily all 169 targets, but at least the broad objective of each goal.

Pay close attention to the three pillars (Economic, Social, Environmental) and their implications. Crucially, identify and remember the major international conferences and agreements: Stockholm (1972), Rio (1992 - Agenda 21), MDGs (2000-2015), and SDGs (2015-2030), along with their key outcomes.

For India, focus on constitutional provisions (Article 48A, 51A(g)), major environmental legislation (EPA 1986, Forest Rights Act 2006), and flagship government schemes directly related to SDGs (e.g., Swachh Bharat, Jal Jeevan Mission, Green Credit Programme, National Green Hydrogen Mission).

NITI Aayog's role as the monitoring agency and the SDG India Index are also high-yield areas. Practice MCQs that test your knowledge of these facts, often involving matching pairs or identifying correct/incorrect statements.

Be wary of subtle traps, such as confusing the year of a report with the year of a conference, or misattributing a specific goal to the MDGs instead of SDGs. Regularly revise the list of SDGs and India's performance indicators.
