India-China Border Standoff in Tawang Sector
December 2022The December 2022 face-off between Indian and Chinese troops in the Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh highlighted ongoing challenges in LAC management despite multiple rounds of military and diplomatic talks. This incident occurred near the strategically important Tawang monastery, which China claims as part of 'South Tibet.' The standoff was resolved through established protocols, but it underscored the fragility of border peace and the need for robust border infrastructure and management systems. The incident led to renewed focus on the 1993 and 1996 agreements on maintaining peace and tranquility along the LAC.
UPSC Angle: UPSC can examine this through multiple lenses: effectiveness of confidence-building measures, role of local commanders in de-escalation, impact on India-China relations, and the strategic importance of Tawang in India's defense architecture
Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System Phase-II Approval
March 2024The Cabinet Committee on Security approved Phase-II of CIBMS with an outlay of ₹34,000 crores, extending smart border solutions to the entire India-Pakistan and India-Bangladesh borders. This represents the largest technological upgrade in India's border management history, incorporating AI-powered surveillance, automated threat detection, and integrated command and control systems. The system will connect all Border Outposts (BOPs) with real-time surveillance data and enable rapid response to border violations. The approval reflects India's shift towards technology-intensive border management.
UPSC Angle: This development is crucial for questions on modernization of security forces, role of technology in governance, budget allocation for border security, and India's strategic response to evolving security challenges
