Administrative Policies — Definition
Definition
Colonial administrative policies were the rules and institutions through which imperial authorities governed territory, collected revenue, enforced decisions and produced information about the population.
In British India they changed across regions and between Company and Crown rule. Land settlements, surveys and official reports reveal how governing objectives were translated into obligations and local relationships.
Administrative policy is not simply a list of governors or enactments: it includes implementation, intermediaries and consequences for those governed. Nor does a formal rule establish that practice was uniform.
A useful account distinguishes policy intention, operating mechanism and the evidence of what occurred in a particular place and period.
