For each settlement, ask who is liable and whether the state's demand can change. The Permanent Settlement fixes the state demand on the zamindar, not every tenant's rent or the price of crops. Ryotwari's direct assessment and mahalwari's village or estate unit are separate features from permanence.

Check geographical associations without making them universal across every district of a presidency. The systems developed through regional and temporal variation. A statement can be wrong because it converts a broad association into an exclusive all-India rule.

In numerical examples, keep the denominator attached to the percentage. Thirty units out of receipts of sixty is fifty percent, even if the nominal demand was unchanged. Do not confuse percentage points with percentage change when comparing shares.

Finally, test causal options. Direct assessment can coexist with moneylender dependence; commercial cultivation can bring a boom and later vulnerability. An administrative label alone does not establish a household's outcome. Look for the interaction of assessment, payment timing, harvest value and credit before selecting an explanation.
