Prelims Strategy

Prepare a small timeline with separate columns for legislation, educational policy and institutions. Put 1829 under the prohibition of sati, 1854 under Wood's Despatch, 1856 under widow-remarriage legislation and 1857 under the three universities. Do not move a date from one category to another merely because the events are connected. A university's establishment is not the date on which a particular reform campaign began.

Next, practise actor–instrument matching. An association may campaign, a reformer may argue from texts, and a government may enact a measure; these are distinct roles. Questions often become difficult when a true actor is attached to the wrong institutional action.

Read statements about outcomes with particular care. Permission to remarry is not proof of universal acceptance, and formal availability of schooling does not establish equal enrolment. Eliminate such inferences by checking whether the evidence concerns a legal rule, a policy aspiration or observed social access. Revise limitations alongside dates so that factual recall supports, rather than replaces, interpretation.
