Sanyasi and Fakir Rebellions — Prelims Strategy

Prelims Strategy

Use a small matrix of region, period, social base, target and source. The setting is later eighteenth-century Bengal and neighbouring areas; the 1770 famine belongs to the causal context. Religious bands and distressed peasants should not be replaced by the participants of a later military or industrial movement merely because both involve resistance.

Check chronology before selecting a policy explanation. A later settlement cannot explain the onset of an earlier famine. Distinguish the broad movement from the Rangpur episode of 1783 and its immediate revenue-contractor setting. Similar regions and grievances are insufficient grounds for treating the labels as synonyms.

For source questions, Anandamath is later literature associated with the memory of Sanyasi resistance. It is not an administrative register or a contemporary transcript of rebel orders. Colonial records are closer to some events but still require attention to author and purpose. Claims about universal support, exact numbers or one command structure need specific evidence beyond the general description of bands and rural participation.
