Sanyasi and Fakir Rebellions — UPSC Importance

UPSC Importance Analysis

The topic shows that resistance to Company rule had regional and social roots well before the organised national movement. It connects changes in political authority with the pressures experienced in rural life. This makes it useful for explaining colonial expansion as a contested process rather than a sequence of administrative measures accepted without opposition.

For Prelims, prepare the period, region, participants, famine context and literary association. Distinguish the Sanyasi–Fakir episodes from Rangpur and from much later mass movements. A familiar agrarian-policy name should not be used as a cause before checking its date against the event being explained.

For Mains, the value lies in a balanced interpretation of popular resistance. Religious organisation and economic grievance are not mutually exclusive explanations. Likewise, colonial descriptions of disorder and later nationalist memories need critical reading. A strong answer explains both the significance and the limits of the mobilisation without inventing a central programme, a precise participant total or a modern ideology that the evidence does not establish.
