Methods and Achievements — Definition
Definition
The methods and achievements of the Moderates concern how early Congress leaders tried to influence colonial government and what their activity accomplished. Their repertoire included petitions, resolutions, public meetings, press discussion and appeals to opinion in Britain.
These methods supported demands about representation, administration and expenditure, as well as a wider economic critique of colonial rule. Achievements must be distinguished by type: developing political arguments and networks is different from securing an immediate policy concession.
The subject therefore requires an assessment of both what constitutional agitation built and why its limited social base and leverage constrained its ability to compel major change.
