Dandi March and Salt Satyagraha — Definition

Definition

The Dandi March was Gandhi's journey from Sabarmati Ashram towards the Gujarat coast in March–April 1930 to challenge the colonial salt law. Beginning on 12 March, it culminated in salt-law violation at Dandi on 6 April and opened a major phase of the Civil Disobedience Movement.

Salt was a powerful issue because it was an everyday necessity governed by colonial restrictions and taxation. The march connected a specific law to the wider question of political authority. Its significance lies in that mechanism of public mobilisation, not in the claim that one march immediately repealed the salt tax or ended British rule.
