The Quit India Movement, also known as the 'August Revolution,' was a pivotal moment in India's struggle for independence, launched by Mahatma Gandhi on August 8, 1942, during World War II. It was a civil disobedience movement demanding an immediate end to British rule in India.

The call to action was encapsulated in Gandhi's powerful slogan, 'Do or Die,' urging Indians to either achieve complete independence or perish in the attempt. This movement emerged from a deep sense of frustration and disillusionment among Indian leaders and the populace, primarily due to the failure of the Cripps Mission to offer a concrete plan for India's self-governance, coupled with the increasing economic hardships and the perceived threat of a Japanese invasion of India.

The British government's insistence on India's participation in World War II without granting genuine political concessions further fueled nationalist sentiments. The movement was unique in its spontaneous and widespread nature, especially after the immediate arrest of all major Congress leaders, including Gandhi, Nehru, and Patel, on August 9, 1942.

This 'leaderless' character meant that the movement quickly devolved into widespread protests, strikes, acts of sabotage against government infrastructure, and the formation of parallel governments in several regions.

Students, peasants, and workers played a significant role, often acting independently or under local leadership. While the British government responded with severe repression, including mass arrests, lathi charges, and even firing on unarmed protestors, the Quit India Movement demonstrated the unwavering resolve of the Indian people to achieve freedom.

It fundamentally altered the political landscape, making it clear to the British that their continued rule in India was untenable in the long run. Though the movement was eventually suppressed by 1944, it laid the groundwork for India's eventual independence in 1947, serving as a powerful testament to mass mobilization and nationalist fervor.
